What do them fashion designers wear? Well, I tell ya, it ain’t what you see on them fancy TV shows, no sir. Them folks, they gotta look the part, you know? Gotta look like they know a thing or two about pretty clothes, even if they just be sittin’ at a desk all day.

I seen them, them fashion designer folks. They come around here sometimes, lookin’ for… I don’t know what. Inspiration, they call it. They wear them plain shirts, mostly. Black or white, nothin’ fancy. And jeans, just like us regular folks. Just plain old jeans. Nothin’ ripped or with holes, though. They gotta look a little bit proper, you see. That’s what they wear for work.
One time, this young gal, a fashion designer, she come up to me, askin’ about my… well, she was lookin’ at my old dress. Said it was “vintage.” I just laughed. Vintage! It was just old! But she was wearin’ just a plain white shirt and some jeans. Looked like she coulda been goin’ to the market, not designin’ no fancy gowns. They just need to move fast, you see? That’s why they wear simple things. Simple t-shirt, simple jeans, that’s what they wear.
- Plain white shirts
- Plain black shirts
- Jeans, just regular ones
- Maybe a jacket, if it’s cold
- Shoes, nothin’ fancy. Need to walk around, you know.
Now, some of them, they like them black clothes. All black, head to toe. Makes ’em look serious, I reckon. Like they got important things on their minds. But really, they just don’t want to worry about what matches what. Black goes with black, easy peasy. Those fashion designer people need that.
And shoes! Don’t even get me started on shoes. You see them models on TV, clompin’ around in them high heels. But the fashion designers? Nah. They wear them flat shoes. Gotta be able to run around, you see? Runnin’ to get fabric, runnin’ to talk to the people makin’ the clothes, runnin’ to show off their designs. No time for wobblin’ around in heels! They need to be comfortable.
So, what do they wear, these fashion designer folks? They wear what’s comfortable. They wear what’s practical. They don’t have time for no fuss and feathers. They got work to do. You don’t need to be all gussied up to make pretty things. So a simple outfit is good. A t-shirt and jeans, black pants, that is good.

One of them fashion designer folks told me, “It’s about the clothes you make, not the clothes you wear.” And I reckon that’s true. You can be wearin’ rags, but if you can make somethin’ beautiful, well, that’s what matters. A good field wear, you know? Like a t-shirt, like jeans, like what we all wear. They wear these to work.
They say some of them like them fancy brands. Nili-somethin’ and The Row. Makes fancy work shirts, they say. Hundred, two hundred dollars! For a shirt! Can you believe it? I can get a whole outfit for that much at the thrift store. But those fashion designer people like them. That’s what I heard.
But most of them fashion designers, they just wear regular clothes. They need clothes that can be easily washed. They may need to deal with spattered coffee, you know. So they wear those clothes like ours. Not too expensive, not too fancy. Just simple, good clothes. It is not about how beautiful they are, it is about how beautiful the clothes they make are.
I remember another fashion designer lady. She always wear a hat. A big, floppy hat. Said it kept the sun out of her eyes when she was sketchin’. I reckon that makes sense. You gotta be able to see what you’re doin’, even if you’re makin’ the fanciest dress in the world. That hat is a kind of accessories, she said. They need these sometimes, too.
So don’t be fooled by them fancy shows and them magazines. Them fashion designers, they’re just regular folks, wearin’ regular clothes. They just got a good eye for makin’ things pretty. And that’s somethin’ special, ain’t it? They wear simple, they wear black, they wear white. That’s how they work. That’s what those fashion designer people wear.

They might be workin’ in them big offices, or them start-up companies, whatever that means. Don’t matter. They still wear them same clothes. Comfortable clothes. Clothes that let ’em do their job. That’s what matters. That is what do fashion designers wear.
