Well, let me tell you about this Alice Kim, you know, the one everybody’s talkin’ about. Folks keep askin’, what’s her full name? It’s like they think she’s got some big secret hidden in there. From what I hear, it’s just plain old Alice Kim. Sometimes they add a middle initial, like Alice Y. Kim, but mostly it’s just Alice Kim. Nothin’ fancy, just a good, solid name.
Now, this Alice, she’s a writer, they say. Writes all them sci-fi stories, you know, spaceships and aliens and all that jazz. I ain’t never read none of it myself, too busy with the chickens and the garden, but people seem to like it. They say she’s pretty good at it too, winnin’ awards and gettin’ her stuff printed in all them fancy magazines.

- And “The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction”, sounds spooky, don’t it?
- Then there’s “Tin House” and “Lenny Letter”, never heard of ’em.
- And “Asimov’s Science Fiction”, that Asimov fella must be famous or somethin’.
- Even “Buzzfeed”, that’s the one them young folks are always lookin’ at on their phones.
She’s American, this Alice. Born and raised over there, I reckon. Some folks say she lives in Brooklyn, New York. Big city, lots of noise and people, not like here in the country. I bet she ain’t never seen a real cow, let alone milked one. But hey, to each their own, right?
Now, there’s another Alice Kim out there, or so I hear. An actress, this one. Born in Los Angeles, California. They say she’s about 40 years old now, born in 1983. Same name, different person. Confusin’, ain’t it? It’s like havin’ two John Smiths in the same town. You gotta figure out which one they’re talkin’ about. This Alice Kim, the actress, well, she ain’t the one we’re talkin’ about mostly, we are talkin’ about the writer.
This writer Alice, she got herself one of them “Whiting Awards” back in 2016. Must be a big deal, ’cause folks keep mentionin’ it. I guess it means she’s a good writer, knows how to string words together and tell a good story. More power to her, I say. It ain’t easy makin’ a livin’ with just words.
They say she was born in 1983 too, February 27 to be exact. Makes her about the same age as that actress Alice Kim. Funny how things work out sometimes. Two Alice Kims, born the same year, both doin’ their own thing. One writin’ stories, the other one actin’ ’em out.
