So, I’ve been seeing the “Barbie” movie everywhere lately, and you know what? The outfits in that movie are killer! I got totally sucked in and decided I needed to try and recreate some of those iconic looks. It’s been a fun little project, and I figured I’d share how it went.

Scouting and Planning

First things first, I spent a good chunk of time just watching clips and looking at stills from the movie. I was trying to pick out outfits that really stood out to me, and that I thought I could maybe pull off. I ended up with a list of about five looks that I was particularly excited about.

Then came the not-so-fun part – figuring out where to find the pieces. I knew I wasn’t going to find exact matches, but I wanted to get as close as possible. I started by checking out some online thrift stores. You’d be surprised what you can find there! I also hit up a few local vintage shops and even just regular stores that I thought might have similar styles.

Shopping and Scavenging

The shopping part was a real mixed bag. Sometimes I’d get super lucky, and other times I’d come up empty-handed. For one of the outfits, I needed a very specific type of pink gingham dress. I swear I looked everywhere! Finally, I found something kind of similar online, but it wasn’t quite right. That’s when I had to get a little creative.

I ended up buying a plain white dress and some pink gingham fabric. My sewing skills are, shall we say, not the best, but I managed to kind of hack together a dress that at least resembled the one from the movie. It wasn’t perfect, but it worked!

Putting It All Together

Once I had all the pieces (or at least some version of them), it was time to put the outfits together. This was probably the most fun part. I laid everything out, tried different combinations, and played around with accessories. For one of the looks, I even attempted to style my hair like Barbie’s. Let’s just say it was a valiant effort, but I’m no hairstylist!

The Final Results

  • Outfit 1: This was the pink gingham dress I mentioned earlier. Paired it with a white hat, and some white heels. It’s not identical but gives the same vibe.
  • Outfit 2: A sparkly disco jumpsuit! I found a silver sequined jumpsuit that worked pretty well. I added some big hoop earrings and some platform heels to complete the look.
  • Outfit 3: Western Barbie was a must. I found a pink vest and a matching pair of pants. I already had a white cowboy hat, but needed to get a pink bandana to tie around my neck. The result was amazing.
  • Outfit 4: A more casual look, featuring a striped top and some high-waisted denim shorts. This one was pretty easy to put together, and it’s actually something I’d wear in real life.
  • Outfit 5: The iconic rollerblading outfit. This one was tough! I finally found a colorful visor, but the real find was a pair of vintage-looking high-top sneakers that were almost exactly like the ones in the movie!

All in all, this was a really fun project. It was cool to step outside of my usual style and try something different. Plus, it gave me a new appreciation for costume designers. Those folks are seriously talented! It was a challenge, for sure, but it was also a blast. And hey, now I’ve got a few new outfits to wear, even if they are a little out there!
