Today, I’m gonna talk about this color, periwinkle. You know, I saw this dress online the other day, and the tag said “periwinkle.” Honestly, I thought, “Isn’t that just light blue?” So, I went down a rabbit hole to figure this out.

My Periwinkle vs. Light Blue Experiment
First, I grabbed a bunch of things around the house that I thought were light blue – a shirt, a sticky note, and even a piece of the sky from a photo. Then, I found some stuff labeled “periwinkle” online, like paint swatches and those color picker tools. I put them all side-by-side on my screen. And you know what?
The “periwinkle” stuff did look a little different. It wasn’t just light blue. There was something else, like a hint of… purple, maybe? It wasn’t a strong purple, but it was there.
Then, I started reading up on it. I am not a color expert, so I just googled it. Turns out, I wasn’t totally wrong. Periwinkle is in the blue family, but it’s more specific than that.
What I Learned About Periwinkle
- Periwinkle is like a mix of blue and purple: People call it “lavender blue” sometimes, so there you go, there is a purple in it.
- It’s a lighter version of a color called indigo: Indigo is this dark, rich blue with a bit of purple in it already.
- There are different “flavors” of periwinkle: I saw something called “light periwinkle” and “pale periwinkle.” They were even lighter and softer than the regular periwinkle I was looking at.
- There are some similar colors: Such as “Mauve” (#E0AFFF) or “Light blue” (#90D5FF). “Mauve” is more pink, while “Light blue” is, well, just a light blue. I also saw “thistle”, they say it’s a muted purple with grey undertones, but to be honest, I cannot tell.
My Conclusion
So, after all this, I realized that periwinkle is not just light blue. It’s like light blue’s cousin, with a little bit of purple mixed in. It’s a pretty color, and I can see why someone would want to name it something special. My experiment might not be scientific, but I think I got it now. And I also learned a bunch of similar colors. Hope this helps you too.
