Well, let me tell ya ’bout this here “safety pin dress.” You know, the one that gal, Elizabeth Hurley, wore way back when. It was a real head-turner, that’s for sure. Folks were talkin’ ’bout it somethin’ fierce.

This Versace fella, he made it. I ain’t never heard of him before, but I guess he was a big deal in them fancy clothes circles. This dress, it wasn’t like anythin’ I ever seen. It had these safety pins, ya know, the kind you use to hold your britches up when the button pops off? Well, this dress had ’em all over, holdin’ the whole thing together. I tell ya, it looked like it was gonna fall apart any minute, but somehow it didn’t.
Now, I ain’t no fashion expert. I like clothes that are comfy and cover up what needs coverin’. But even I could see this dress was somethin’ special. It was black and shiny, and it hugged that Elizabeth gal in all the right places. She looked mighty fine in it, that’s for sure.
- It showed a lot of skin, but it wasn’t trashy, ya know?
- It was sexy, but it still looked… well, I guess you’d call it “classy.”
- I don’t know how they do it, those fancy designers.
That night, everybody was whisperin’ ’bout that dress. “Did you see that safety pin dress?” “Can you believe she wore that?” It was all the rage, they said. The papers were full of pictures, and the TV folks kept showin’ it over and over.
I reckon that dress made that Versace fella even more famous. And it sure did wonders for that Elizabeth Hurley gal too. After that, she was everywhere. Movies, magazines, you name it. All ’cause of a dress held together with safety pins. Goes to show ya, sometimes the simplest things can make the biggest splash.
Now, I heard tell that some folks tried to copy that dress. They went out and bought a bunch of safety pins and tried to make their own. But it ain’t the same, ya know? It’s like tryin’ to make your grandma’s apple pie, but it just don’t taste the same. You need the right ingredients and the right know-how. And that Versace fella, he had both.

I also heard somebody sayin’ somethin’ about pinchin’ the fabric and twistin’ it. And then you gotta use somethin’ they called a “Bobby pin” to keep it all together. Sounded complicated to me. I ain’t got time for all that fussin’. I’d rather just stick to my good ol’ cotton dresses. They ain’t fancy, but they’re comfortable and they get the job done.
But that safety pin dress, it was somethin’ else. It was bold, it was daring, and it was unforgettable. It’s one of them dresses that people will be talkin’ about for years to come. And who knows, maybe someday it’ll come back in style and all the young gals will be wearin’ safety pins again. Fashion’s a funny thing, ya never know what’s gonna be popular next.
Anyway, that’s my take on the safety pin dress. It ain’t much, but it’s what I remember. It was a dress that made a big impression on a lot of folks, including this old lady. And that’s sayin’ somethin’, ain’t it?
I tell you, in my day we didn’t have nothing like that. We made our own clothes and they were made to last. Not like these fancy things that fall apart after you wear ’em once or twice. And talk about expensive! I bet that dress cost more than my whole house did back then. But I guess that’s the way things are these days. People got more money than sense, if you ask me. And they spend it on all sorts of foolishness. Well, to each their own I say, to each their own. But I’ll stick to my good old dresses, thank you very much.
