Alright, let’s yak about this Shanghai street fashion, eh? I ain’t no fancy pants expert, but I see things, ya know? I see what them young’uns are wearin’ on the streets, and I can tell ya, it ain’t like what we used to wear back in the day, that’s for sure.

First off, seems like everyone likes their clothes BIG now. Like, real big. Them pants, they’re all baggy, like potato sacks almost. And the jackets? Don’t even get me started! They’re huge! Swallow you whole, they could. I seen this fella the other day, his jacket was so big, looked like he was wearin’ a tent! But hey, I guess that’s the style, what they call “oversized silhouettes” or somethin’. Kids these days, always gotta be different, ain’t it?
And shoes? Well, them sneakers are everywhere. But not the plain white ones we used to wear. These are all…loud. Got all sorts of colors and designs on ’em. Some even got them thick soles, make you taller, I guess. They wear ’em with everything too, even with them fancy clothes. It’s kinda weird, but I guess it’s comfy, which is more than I can say for them pointy high heel shoes those city gals used to wear.
- Big clothes
- Loud sneakers
- Lots of colors
Another thing I noticed is the colors. Man, they ain’t afraid of no color, that’s for sure. Bright reds, yellows, blues…you name it, they wearin’ it. And they mix and match ’em too, all crazy like. Sometimes it looks good, sometimes it looks like a dog’s breakfast, but hey, who am I to judge? They also got these t-shirts with big pictures and words on ’em. Some are funny, some are…well, I don’t understand half of ’em, but the young folks seem to like ’em.
Now, let’s talk about the weather, ’cause that changes things, ya know? Shanghai, it gets hot in the summer, real hot. Like, sticky hot, makes you sweat just standin’ there. So, they wear light stuff, you know, thin shirts and shorts. But then the weather, it turns on ya. Come winter, it gets cold, bone-chillin’ cold. Then they gotta bundle up, wear layers, like onions. Big coats, scarves, hats…the whole shebang. Gotta keep warm, or you’ll catch your death of cold, that’s what my mama always said.
Layering is the key, that’s what I heard someone say. Makes sense, I guess. You can take stuff off if you get too hot, put it back on if you get too cold. Smart, them city folks, sometimes. And the coats, they ain’t just plain old coats neither. They got all sorts of styles, long ones, short ones, puffy ones… some are even kinda fancy looking.

Now, I hear tell there’s this thing called Shanghai Fashion Week. Sounds mighty fancy, don’t it? From what I gather, it’s a big deal where all them fashion folks show off their new clothes. I ain’t never been, but I seen pictures. Lots of…interesting…stuff. Some of it looks like somethin’ you could wear to the market, other stuff…well, I don’t know where you’d wear it, maybe to a costume party or somethin’. They got all sorts of shapes and colors, real eye-catchin’ stuff.
But here’s the thing, work clothes, that’s a different story. When you gotta go to work in them offices, you gotta dress…proper. Men, they wear suits, you know, the jacket and pants that match. Women, they wear suits too, or something…modest, they call it. Can’t be showin’ too much skin, I guess. Gotta look respectable, business-like. It’s a whole different world from the street, that’s for sure.
So yeah, that’s what I see on the streets of Shanghai. Big clothes, loud sneakers, lots of colors, and it all depends on the weather. And if you’re going to work, well, you gotta dress like you mean business. It ain’t always pretty, and it ain’t always practical, but it’s… somethin’. It’s Shanghai fashion, I guess. And it seems like everyone wants to show off who they are through what they wear, which I guess ain’t so different from how it’s always been, just the clothes themselves that change. Makes you think, don’t it? About how times change, and how folks always find new ways to express themselves. Even if it means wearin’ clothes big enough to fit a whole family!
