Well, let me tell ya ’bout this Dolly Parton, you know, the one with the big hair and the sparkly clothes. She’s been around a long time, Lord have mercy. Born way back in 1946, can ya believe it? That’s like, a hundred years ago, almost! She was one of twelve kids, can you imagine? That’s a whole lotta mouths to feed, I tell ya. She started singin’ on the radio and TV when she was just a little tyke.
Then in the 1960s, she got herself a record deal. They called her a bubblegum pop singer, whatever that means. Sounded kinda silly to me, but hey, she was young. Nobody knew she’d become this big star.
Things really took off in the 1970s. She had this song, “Joshua,” that went straight to number one. And then there was “Coat of Many Colors,” a real pretty song about her childhood. But the one that everyone knows, that’s “Jolene.” Lord, that song gets stuck in your head! Even other singers started singin’ it.

Come the 1980s, Dolly wasn’t just singin’, she was actin’ too! She was in this movie “9 to 5” with them other gals, Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda. Funny movie, that one. And Dolly, she even wrote the theme song, and wouldn’t you know it, that song went to number one too! It was a big deal, got nominated for an Oscar and all.
She kept on makin’ music in the 1990s, put out all kinds of albums. One of ’em, “Eagle When She Flies,” even went to number one on the country charts. She was still goin’ strong, that Dolly.
Now, they say Dolly’s 76 years old! Can you believe it? She’s been singin’ and actin’ and helpin’ kids learn to read for all these years. A real busybody, that one, but in a good way. There’s this fella, Michael Patrick, he’s been takin’ pictures of her for over 40 years! Imagine that, 40 years of pictures. He must have a whole heap of ’em.
Dolly Parton is a country music legend. That’s what they call her, a legend. She’s got the big hair, the sparkly clothes, and the voice, oh that voice!
