So, I was messing around online the other day, and I stumbled upon something called the “American Fur Company.” Sounded kinda old-timey and interesting, so I dug in a bit deeper.

Turns out, this company was a big deal back in the day. It was started up in 1808 by this guy, John Jacob Astor. Apparently, he was a German immigrant who came to the US and saw a chance to make some serious money in furs.
First, I tried to figure out what exactly this company did.
- I read that they were all about buying and selling furs, skins, you know, stuff like that.
- They also dealt in buffalo robes, which I guess were a hot commodity back then.
Then, I got curious about how they even got started.
- It looks like Astor set up shop in New York, of all places.
- April 6, 1808, is the date it was officially incorporated, I discovered.
- I found out that Astor was born in Germany in 1763, came to America after the Revolution, and started trading furs, shipping them to Europe from New York. That’s his origin story.
Next, I wanted to understand why furs were such a big thing.
- It seems like North America had tons of animals with valuable fur.
- Native Americans were super involved in trapping and trading. That was some useful information. They wanted European goods, so it was a win-win.
- And, people in Europe were crazy about furs, so there was always a demand.
I also did some digging into the early days of the fur trade.

- Turns out, it wasn’t just Americans. French explorers and fishermen were the first ones to get in on the action way back in the 1500s in Canada.
- They started trading with the Native Americans, offering them stuff like kettles and knives, to build good relationships. Smart move!
Finally, I realized how huge the American Fur Company became.
- They were the first American company to really give the European fur traders a run for their money.
- In the early 1800s, they were the top dogs in the American fur trade. They really cleaned up!
It’s pretty wild to think about how much this one company shaped the fur trade in America. I mean, they were everywhere! It’s a good thing I did some searching around online or else I would’ve never learned about the American Fur Company, and the guy behind it, John Jacob Astor.
