Yesterday, I got a little bit obsessed with the phrase “tick-tock.”

It all started when I was watching a TikTok video, and I heard the familiar “tick-tock” sound of a clock. It got me thinking, why do we say “tick-tock” and not “tock-tick”?
So, I decided to do some digging. I started by just saying “tick-tock” over and over again, trying to figure out what felt different when I switched the words around. Then, I searched the phrase on the internet. It’s funny how many people have actually thought about this before!
Turns out, there’s some linguistic stuff related to it. I found some discussion that “tick-tock” is kind of like a trochee or something. I don’t really understand what that means, but it’s related to poetry or something.
I also found some other examples, like “ding-dong” and “King Kong.” It seems like there’s a pattern here, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on it.
Later, I was looking for the name of that song in the TikTok video. I usually use apps like Shazam for that. I opened Shazam and played the video. It found the song. And it got me thinking, what else could I find on TikTok?

- I spent the rest of the afternoon going down a rabbit hole of TikTok videos.
- I discovered some funny skits, some cool dance moves, and a whole bunch of songs I’d never heard before.
- I even tried to make my own TikTok video, but let’s just say I’m not going to be a TikTok star anytime soon.
Anyway, it was a fun little adventure, all started by that simple “tick-tock” sound. It just goes to show you, sometimes the most ordinary things can lead to the most interesting discoveries.
